  1. The space hippies could have been a perfect fit for that spore planet from “This Side of Paradise”.

Anyone else notice the fried eggs they were all wearing?

    1. I suspect it was meant to be a symbol of their movement. A close look shows an oroborus inscribed in the yolk.

Also, it was a little jarring to see this episode so close to the 50th aniversary of the August 1969 killings. They occurred only six months after this episode aired. I wonder if the lingering dislike of this episode is in part due to it being a subconscious reminder.

  2. As I noted with regard to “Let This Be Your Last Battlefield”, I think you are underestimating just how revolutionary* it was at the time to air an episode of network TV that hinted that the hippies might actually have some good points. It’s really really hard to look back from our current perspective and understand how viscerally most American adults loathed everything about them and dismissed them as juvenile delinquents. Your observation about the Enterprise crew talking about these adult scientists as if they were children is spot-on.

  3. *I mean ‘revolutionary’ literally — many Americans equated being a hippie with trying to subvert or overthrow the government.
